This page covers the mechanics behind KentuckyMat's rankings and stats — where the data comes from and exactly how each number is calculated. For the philosophy behind the rankings, see the About page.
Every match result on KentuckyMat comes from TrackWrestling, the platform Kentucky high schools use to run tournaments and duals. Results are pulled and processed regularly throughout the season. If a match isn't entered into TrackWrestling, it isn't reflected on the site.
Rankings are built from head-to-head results, margin of victory (falls, tech falls, major decisions vs. regular decisions), and common opponents across the season. That data is assembled into a weekly ranking matrix, which is then reviewed and finalized by hand before publication — combining the computed results with a manual check for accuracy, not published as a raw algorithmic output.
Girls rankings are updated every Wednesday and boys rankings every Thursday during the season. Every weekly release is archived, so past rankings remain viewable going forward.
Each wrestler's season record counts every decided bout: regular decisions, falls, tech falls, major decisions, forfeits, medical forfeits, injury defaults, and disqualifications. Byes and no-results (a scheduled match that never happened) are excluded. A bout is credited to a wrestler even if only their opponent's TrackWrestling entry recorded it, and duplicate entries for the same bout (a tournament occasionally gets listed twice under a different name or date) are identified and removed so a single bout is never counted twice.
A wrestler's career record is the sum of their linked seasons. Seasons are matched to the correct career record and checked by hand, so a name change or a missed link between years gets corrected rather than splitting one wrestler's history across multiple entries.
Bonus Rate is the percentage of a wrestler's non-forfeit wins that came by fall, tech fall, or major decision. Forfeit wins count toward the season record but are excluded from both the numerator and denominator of Bonus Rate, since no bonus points are actually scored in a forfeit.
On team pages, "Projected State Tournament Points" estimates each starter's expected scoring at the state tournament based on their current statewide rank, summed across the team's lineup. It's a projection based on rank, not a guarantee — actual state tournament results depend on the bracket and how the season plays out.
Boys data goes back to 2013. Girls wrestling was sanctioned by the KHSAA in 2024, so girls data begins that season.
